By day, Torrisi Italian Specialties is a sandwich shop on the northern edge of Little Italy. This is noteworthy, because Torrisi is nothing quite like the tourist traps and lackluster Italian food that dominate the food scene a few blocks away. Take their Roast Turkey Hero: a signature item with thick, juicy slices of fresh roasted turkey breast and a garlic and pepper glaze. There’s also the chicken parm hero: juicy, salty, intense, pan-fried in premium olive oil and served with handmade mozzarella. By night, Torrisi becomes an intimate enoteca, offering a $50 prix fixe dinner with a choice between two main courses. The rest is the chef’s choice to be shared among the table, and all the ingredients are local and seasonal to boot. A few recent examples: Greenmarket-ricotta gnocchi with ramps and grated Greenmarket Pecorino, Long Island Duck with Mulberry Mustard (a culinary wink to its NoLitTa address?), and local-caught tilefish with potato galette. For dessert, a revolving pastry list featuring such confections as a mini-cannoli stuffed with Brooklyn’s own Salvatore Ricotta will satisfy the most discerning sweet tooth. Sweet dreams to follow shortly thereafter…
