José Freire relocated his gallery from an überhip Chelsea address to this high-ceilinged space in 2006, confirming that downtown is once again the place to be. He did well – the gallery has showed such hotshots as web-artist Cory Arcangel and photographer Ryan McGinley, French video artist Brice Delsperger and more established artists, including minimalist installation/assemblagist Ross Knight. A second Team Gallery was opened just around the corner on Wooster Street to accommodate all the potential the headquarters showed for growth, The first show at the space, which sits on the ground floor of a freestanding building, was David Ratcliff’s Portraits and Ghosts, while the 83 Grand Street space concurrently housed an exhibition by Berlin based artist Jakob Kolding. “Opening an additional space,” Gallery Director Miriam Katzeff says, “will just give people even more of a reason to come see us.” We couldn’t agree more.
