194 Elizabeth St., New York, NY (Spring & Prince Sts.)
This intimate underground lair is anything but surface-level. Descend the stairs and the European wine-cellar vibe immediately wipes the busy NoLIta streets above from memory. The exposed wood beams, rustic tables, and candle-lit surroundings give the place a mysterious charm. The scene is a mix of hipster and family types, all of whom we doubt just stumbled upon the place. Peasant Wine Bar is a destination worth some calculation, and patrons come well-prepared to wine and dine. The service is warm and personal, and you can order from a selection of wines, cheeses, appetizers, and entrees: the wood-fired, perfectly bubbly, margherita pizza is always a crowd-pleaser. All things considered, it’s a great place to bring a date, to have a nibble before dinner, or a nightcap afterward.
