Lupa was the third restaurant for the wildly successful Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich duo. Billing itself as an “Osteria Romana,” this casual restaurant with a warm and lively atmosphere is a West Village take on a traditional Roman trattoria. The owners have stayed true to their intent to keep the menu as tradition-bound to beloved Roma as possible, with a wine list representing almost every region of Italy and a salumeria serving Italian artisan meats and cheeses, Stewed oxtails and saltimbocca are the most Roman of menu choices, but the garganelli with a tripe ragu is the star of the show. The bar offers the largest selection of bitters in the city, as well as a variety of grappas, dessert wines, sambucas, and other Italian liquors.
