Opening in the Flatiron district in 1888, Irving Plaza spent the next 90 years finding its identity. Transitioning from a German Theatre to a burlesque house, Yiddish theatre, French and Soviet film house, and Polish Army Vet community center, it wasn’t until 1978 when it was converted into a rock music venue. Since then, the Plaza has hosted acts such as Talking Heads, the Ramones, U2, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, establishing its history as New York City’s premier music venue. Today it remains a favorite destination of the local music scene and a major stepping stone on the career path of hundreds of artists every year. The intimate ballroom setting is a great place to check out a fresh act or an old favorite, and no matter where you are, you’re in an excellent spot to take in the band. Twenty-five cents from each ticket is donated to LIFEbeat, a nonprofit organization mobilizing the music industry in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
