Founded in 1997 by co-owners John Cheim & Howard Read from the Robert Miller Gallery, this prestigious Chelsea hallmark has had two homes in the art-centric neighborhood. With humble roots as a garage on 23rd Street, today it occupies 547 West 25th Street, a triumphant 6,000-square-foot gallery designed by the acclaimed firm Gluckman Mayner Architects. Three exhibition rooms include skylights and have 16-foot ceilings. Works span from painting and illustration to sculpture and photography, featuring artists such as Jenny Holzer, Louise Fishman, Louise Bourgeois, Joan Mitchell, Donald Baechler, and Jack Pierson. Additionally, Cheim & Read has developed a roster of artists who work in photographic media, such as Robert Mapplethorpe and William Eggleston, an even has a resale program of select works by twentieth-century artists including Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Cy Twombly.
