Over the years, 303 Gallery and principal Lisa Spellman have fostered the careers of critically acclaimed artists working in a variety of media, including photographers Thomas Demand and Stephen Shore and painters Inka Essenhigh, Mary Heilmann and Karen Kilimnik, amongst countless others. 303’s relatively new Chelsea space was designed by the architecture firm StudioMDA, creating an airy, light-filled arena that doubles the gallery’s square footage, with skylights, glass floors and the columns of the High Line running through, all protected by a cast concrete facade. Before that, 303 was a mainstay of the Soho and East Village scenes of the late 1980s-early 1990s, with Spellman proof that renegades turn into legends, at least in the art world. Always on the edge, 303 should be one of the first stops when perusing all of what Chelsea has to offer.
