Encouraged by the economic vitality and consumerist culture following World War II, artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Andy Warhol explored the image world of popular culture and took inspiration from advertisements, pulp magazines, billboards, movies, television, and comic strips.
