TRAVEL: GRANDLIFE’S GUIDE TO SXSW
So you decided to head to Austin, TX for the fabled SXSW, and now that you’ve arrived, you haven’t a clue how to navigate this almighty goliath.
GrandLife have made it easy for you with a must-do, must-see guide to Austin.
With tips on getting around, bands to catch, stores to peruse and dining, enjoy GrandLife’s guide on how to do SXSW like a veteran.
Wake Up: first things first – your ultimate coffee stops should include Houndstooth Coffee and Caffe Medici. These cafe’s take their coffee very seriously. Considered the ‘sommeliers’ of coffee, you won’t go wrong here.
Shopping: JM Drygoods sells a array of Mexican woven throws, hand-made leather footwear, candles, hand woven baskets, and clothing. Beautifully curated, this is the perfect Texan boutique for finding a novel treat. By George is at the other end of the scale. Luxury designer brands sit side by side with trendy NY-based labels with a good selection of everything in between. Balenciaga, The Row, Rag & Bone, Dries Van Noten and Steven Alan…they’re all here. Well placed by the epic Wholefoods store on 6th & N Lamar, this is a perfect place to pick up an outfit, with the store staff as friendly as they come.
Vintage Clothing: For the ultimate curated vintage clothing store, check out Laced With Romance on S1st. Recommended to us by native Texan, Erin Wasson, it’s a perfect combination of inexpensive and special 70′s disco dresses, ethnic southwestern rucksacks, and rare band tees, and more. We even spotted a mint condition Balenciaga mini dress for $180.
Art: Visit the Umlauf Sculpture Garden. The Umlauf sculpture garden & museum is a serene and natural setting for the work of 20th century American sculptor Charles Umlauf and other contemporary sculptors. With birds and waterfalls, and a plethora of trees, it’s a beautiful place to find some quiet time away from the hectic and loud SXSW schedule.
Music: GrandLife recommends catching the following acts. Often playing several times over the week, check the SXSW schedule for full listings of band performance times. Oberhofer / Peaking Lights / Sleep∞Over / Bear In Heaven / Lissy Trullie / Pond / Nicholas Jaar / Yelle dj’s / Com Truise / Grimes / The Magnetic Fields / Teengirl Fantasy
Relax: Tired feet, aching legs, dry eyes… It’s festival fever. You need some well deserved time out, and Milk & Honey will take care of you. This perfectly zen day-spa and retreat will bring you back to life, and get you back in great spirits for the rest of the week. GrandLife recommends the SXSW Detox Retreat. The treatment starts with an hour-long massage with detox massage oil. Toxins evaporate away with 20 minutes under the steam canopy while receiving a head + neck massage. A gym, cafe and spa in one, Mecca offers an irresistible array of specialty massages to ease out the kinks or simply soothe the soul. Luxurious honey-mandarin sugar scrubs, relaxing hot stones, or ginger infused shea butter will ease your weary SXSW bones.
