THE NEW YORK UNDERGROUND
It’s a full picture: business suitsblend into leather and denim, flowing Halston-like silhouettes, facesold, young, fresh, scarred- and ever-present graffiti. His portrait ofthis period offers a stark look of the city’s relatively darker past, yet his stylistic rawness emboldens both its grit and its beauty throughflash-lit color rich film grain. Additionally, the photographer’sphysical proximity to his subjects is awe-inspiring, as is his abilityto consistently capture a feeling of truth and sincerity, just as he didwith Brooklyn Gang and in his documenting of the Civil Rights movementthroughout the South.
He would continue this photographic mission for the next four years, and in 1986 Aperture published the series- aptly named “Subway.”
