MUSIC: NEW BUILD

Yesterday Was Lived And Lost - the debut album from newly formed band, NEW BUILD.

Less than a year since their formation, the ‘supergroup’ of sorts, New Build have another plate ready for the world; the full-length Yesterday Was Lived and Lost, twelve songs of sharp, playful, focused electronic pop.

Al Doyle, multi-instrumentalist for Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem, acts as the keystone of a sound both disco and despondent, nonchalantly moving through lonely lyrics while metronomically plucking out tight, playful, and restless guitar work. He’s joined by fellow Hot Chip member and knob-spinner Felix Martin, sound engineer Tom Hopkins, and on vocals when called upon, PLANNINGTOROCK’s Janine Rostron.

Since their debut EP was released in November 2011, Misery Loves Company (also song included on the new full-length), they’ve augmented and built upon a sound that references confessional indie such as Menonema as easily as it does the quiet cuts of Smashing Pumpkins. The kaleidoscopic circuit boards of LCD Soundsystem forebears Out Hud, experiments in layers and build, and is tempered with a whittled austerity.

It’s a record for headphones at times, and for a massive P.A. at others – an organic statement from three complex artists growing up and out and into.

Below, listen to four songs from Yesterday Was Lived and Lost, due out on April 1st via their own Lanark Recordings (you can pre-order the record here).

The group will be coming to New York City in March for two sold-out dates at the diminutive Mercury Lounge, before returning to Europe to finish the remainder of their tour.
