INTERVIEW: VICTOR VAZQUEZ – DAS RACIST
This weekend, GrandLife got to hang out with Victor Vazquez, AKA KOOL A.D., and member of rap group, DAS RACIST.
Victor was at the Tribeca Grand Hotel to celebrate the launch of his new album, 51 – the second release already this year.
Known for their use of humor, academic references, foreign allusions, and unconventional style, Das Racist has been both dismissed as joke rap and hailed as an urgent new voice in rap.
We sent over a few questions to new friend in the hope of finding out a little more about Das Racist, and to gain some deeper knowledge of the clever, bearded man behind it…but instead received an email love letter and slightly more confusion;
GL: As a recent convert to Das Racist, what are some of the songs I should begin with to best understand the group?
VV: They’re all garbage.
GL: How do you feel about fame, and do you feel any sense of anxiety or responsibility to be a certain way, now that you are in the spotlight?
VV: I feel pretty good almost all of the time.
GL: Describe to me what you envisioned when beginning Das Racist? How has that idea evolved?
VV: I didn’t envision anything, I was just “hanging out.”
GL: What do you think you’d be doing, if not for Das Racist?
VV: Various shit.
GL: How did you come up with the name?
VV: I didn’t come up with the name, I think its dumb.
GL: What IS NY to you… and can tell me your fave spots to chill?
VV: I mostly just hang out at the Tribeca Grand Hotel.
GL: What’s next for you as a group?
VV: Make one more album and break up.
GL: One last thing, Victor… do you think the Mayans are right about the world ending this year?
VV: Yes.
