Every once in a while we put together a bash with too many bold faced names to work into the title tag line, and last Friday was certainly one of them.

At 10pm we staged a full scale hotel takeover at the Tribeca Grand and invited a bi-coastal coalition of sound hounds to break it down. Poolside, the summer synth project that was literally started in a pool house out in LA would be headlining FIXED (JDH & Dave P) the evening, lucky for us producer Jeffrey Paradise had a moment to sit down with us before curtain call:

GrandLife: So tell us a little about Poolside, we’re excited to have you guys here tonight.

Jeffrey Paradise: It’s been a really fun ride man, we started off just a couple of dudes who wanted to make music that we wanted to listen to – simple clean music.

GL: Who would have thought that music designed to be listened to by a pool would have caught on? What was the tipping point for you guys?

JP: I think it was really when we released our cover of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon – that track got picked up real quick and spread like wildfire over the internet. We knew something was going on when we got an email from James Murphy [of LCD Soundsystem] asking for a vinyl pressing of the track.

GL: James is good people, what’d his email say?

JP: It was really unassuming actually, it went something like: “Hey guys, My name’s James, my band recently split up so I’ve been DJing a lot more lately. I heard your track online and really dug it – is there any chance you’ve made a vinyl pressing of it?”

GL: Haha! We can attest to his interest in the track, it’s really quality.

JP: Thanks! We’ll be playing it tonight, you gonna make it to the show?

Indeed we would be making it to the show, where we were promptly serenaded by their space age synths and cucumber cool vocals in the downstairs salon.

Upstairs was an equally busy affair with an impressive rotation: Ice Choir played live while Nightvision, Caroline Polachek (of Chairlift) Jorge Elbrecht and Colleen Nika manned the DJ Decks. The night carried on in fantastic revelry till the wee – and we mean wee – hours of the morning.

Take a listen to poolside’s version of Harvest Moon below.
