Top 3 places you find pieces for your Halloween outfit in NYC?
Vintage Stores- I love Angela’s vintage or Rue St Denis, both are in the vintage stores in the East Village- you can get a lot of ideas just from checking out their wares… I usually start with a vintage piece for inspiration. Halloween Adventure is incredible as well. Also, Sephora and Ricky’s – I find that creative makeup really makes the costume.
Where do you get your Halloween costume inspiration each year?
I usually start with a vintage piece that gives me some kind of inspiration. I’m usually not a real Halloween planner – I don’t plan months in advance, so traditional costumes aren’t really the way for me.
Favorite Halloween costume to date?
I don’t usually wear makeup, but I love playing with it, so I like to really go for it on Halloween. I had fun being Fever Ray a few years ago….

Mandy Brooks and I usually DJ the Grandlife party on Halloween, so sometimes I do our makeup and we dress up in complementary costumes…

Top 3 places you find pieces for your Halloween outfit in NYC?
I usually find all of my pieces at totally random places. So I don’t really have a top 3. I think getting things online is probably the best. And then anything additional that is specific you can track down.
Where do you get your Halloween costume inspiration each year?
Every year I try to think of something different. I never go with what the big pop culture trend was that year because you know everyone will be dressed the same for the most part, so I try to do something a little offbeat. I like to look like a totally different person – I don’t like being recognizable.

I have had some epic costumes, I usually go full on! I would say it is a toss up between when I was Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice and when I was my teenage 90′s “Kandi raver” self. I think I had more fun as the raver for sure!
Best Halloween memory in NYC?
Halloween in NYC is the best because everyone dresses up. So it honestly doesn’t matter where you are because it’s hilarious trying to figure out who everyone is. I guess my best Halloween memory in NYC would be the Misshapes Halloween party in 2005. I dressed up as Edie Sedgwick hahah! That party was a blast!

I would have to say my first Halloween in NY, which was back in 2003. 5 girlfriends and me dressed up like cheerleaders and we had these Dutch boys who were in a band called Oil dress up as our water boys. They were our personal water boys the whole night serving us an unlimited supply of drinks.

Top 3 places you find pieces for your Halloween outfit in NYC?
I think for the past two years I got my costume at Screaming Mimi’s. They have so much great vintage that is perfect for Halloween. I never get the full costume kit at the Halloween stores.  It always looks so cheap and all the costumes for girls are really lame.
Where do you get your Halloween costume inspiration each year?
Every year it’s just so random how I decide what to be, I love to plan my costume for months in advance though. This year I have a costume coming from Tokyo so I hope it arrives in time…

I think “raped bride” from two years ago was my all time favorite. People love a sick costume.
Best Halloween memory in NYC?
I think it was my first Halloween here. I was dressed as the Little Red Riding hood (NOT the inappropriate version) and we were a big group that went to Rose Bar for a V Magazine party. It was amazing to see all these creative people completely dressed up in these amazing creations. Never seen anything like it!

Top 3 places you find pieces for your Halloween outfit in NYC?
Fabric stores! Spandex House, Belraf Fabrics and of course, Halloween Adventure.
Where do you get your Halloween costume inspiration each year?
I usually get inspired by a small detail or textile or even a color and go from there. Last year I was Polka dots, checks and stripes. Two Halloweens ago, I was Dead Katie (me), and the year before that I was a Candy Corn! (That’s as long as I’ve been in NYC).
Favorite Halloween costume to date?
My sophomore year at RISD, I dressed as a Q-Tip for the Halloween Artists Ball. I wore an all white cat suit and made a huge hat out of cotton balls, I also loved the time when I was really little and dressed as a white rabbit. I’ve always liked to create monochromatic costumes.

Getting dressed, always!
