Consisting of twenty-nine different theatres and halls, the Lincoln Center is undoubtedly New York’s most comprehensive entertainment hub. Home to both the New York Philharmonic and the New York City Ballet, there is always something great to be seen on any given day of the week. Constructed in the 1950s by John D. Rockerfeller III, this cultural epicentre holds all the major operas, dance productions and concerts, as well as more intimate performances. You name it, the Lincoln Center has it. The hardest part is choosing what you want to see.

The Museum of Modern Art is a much-visited hub for anyone seeking a creative outing whilst in NYC. Lesser known, however, is the MoMA’s private cinema complex, showing a select schedule of films on a daily basis. You never know what to expect in terms of offerings, and that’s half the fun. Any given day could see a variety of genres, from art house, foreign, documentary, archive footage and the latest Hollywood blockbusters, thrown in the mix. The MoMA also hosts small film festivals, based around current world events, or a particular exhibition they may have showing in the main gallery. Whether you are a cinephile, or simply love watching films, the MoMA cinema is the perfect place to while away a rainy afternoon.

Drawing lofty comparisons to Seattle’s Crocodile Café, Mercury Lounge has perfected the recipe for booking up-and-coming acts at affordable prices, housing them in an intimate-enough atmosphere and consistently attracting high-energy crowds. The Lower East Side location doesn’t hurt either – attracting an eclectic mix of neighbors, artists and music lovers alike, Mercury also reels in an interesting fringe following – bankers and bridge-and-tunnel types sneak in here for their occasional rock fix too. With CBGB’s gone, this is one venue that really is still all about the music – the kind of place where you’re likely to share a lager with the bassist before the show – and your best bet to catch the next best band before they hit the big-time likes of Madison Square Garden.

Scenario 1: Are you itching to see the latest Michael Bay robo-stravaganza, Bruce Willis crash-fest or Pixar’s latest cast of talking animals in 3D, equipped with a tub of popcorn and a giant Diet Coke? There are plenty of places to do this; however, Angelika is not one of them. Scenario 2: Are you craving the most delicious gluten-free muffin of your life, paired with the latest Bill Murray and Wes Anderson flick? Or the next earth-shaking, politically-disparaging documentary and a macchiato? Head to arthouse theater Angelika, located in the heart of SoHo. Find provocative film festival selections from Sundance to Venice, playing on six screens. As seating for various films is called out in the lobby, the adjoining café makes for one of the best casual meet and greets. No ordinary popcorn stand, the café features cappuccino, panini, gourmet cakes, and vegan cookies from Sacred Chow.

With excellent sight lines, out-of-this-world acoustics, and bars on all three levels, it’s no wonder the Bowery Ballroom has held the title of best music club in New York since it opened its doors in 1998. The mid-size Lower East Side rock palace, formerly a vaudeville hall and once a shoe store, boasts a downstairs lounge and balcony seating. Each floor conveniently has its own bar. The spacious main room officially has a 550-person capacity, yet gives off a cozy vibe great for the diverse crowd and wide range of artists sharing the stage here. Need more convincing? Consider this: When R.E.M. decided to play an invitation-only New York show to promote its most recent album, Up, the then-six-month-old Bowery Ballroom was their first choice. Now go forth and get thee to the box office.
